Reviewer Summary & Review Rating
RobGrimwood MSR Whisperlite - Buy One
This is one of the best bits of gear I've ever used. I've just had to replace my old one after 10 years or more though *only* because it's lost. OK, so petrol stoves are a little sooty when starting up but when it's going it's like an afterburner. OK so you need to master the simmering but it's fine after a bit of experience. With this stove but you can get fuel for it everywhere in the world and there's no environmental issues with discarding spent cannisters. You can get a spares kit too so you can maintain and repair it anywhere in the world (not often!). And don't forget the benefit that whenever you get back to civilisation you can top up your fuel tank rather than buying a new cannister and carrying a half-spent one. Oh, and when it's freezing, your fuel isn't sluggish.

Steve Wiliams Whisperlite Int. 600 stove
I have been using this stove for some time now and it is the best bit of kit i have ever used. Being in the British Army, my stove has taken some punishment on exercise and operations. It has served me well in the cold of a Bosnian winter to the heats of a summer in Iraq, and has never once let me down. If you need a light, compact multi fuel stove that is easy to use and maintain in the the harshest conditions, then this is the stove for you.

John Williams Whisperlite
I fully agree with Rob Grimwood's review. This is the first stove that I bought for backpacking. However, because of priming flare up, I had to use this very vigorous stove outside the tent. This obviously led to delays in cooking during bad weather, so I changed to a Pocket Rocket. I still have the Whisperlite and know that someday, when snowbound, I'll wish that I had brought it along. Please note that my experience is solely for UK backpacking!!

Jimbo Hmmm... not so good
I bought one of these thinking it would be the business. BUT. Not very good at high altitudes, theres little control between full blast or simmer and the flame can going out so you have to wait 10 mins to prime it again. Not good when you are freezing/starving! Finally the plastic fuel insert has broken so will need to buy another at ?20 (!) or risk exploding when I light the stove. Buy a trangia- bulky but will never let you down.
