Volcom: Sustainability Goals
Since their launch in 91’ Volcom have been at the forefront of the board sports industry and with that comes a responsibility to set an example of virtue. 2013 saw the launch of their New Future campaign to officially implement sustainability targets to reach by 2020. An excellent way to motivate their desire, holding themselves accountable for their impact on the environment as well as the community around them, and finding ways to make it more positive.
As we say goodbye to 2020, we at The Snowboard Asylum thought it important to highlight just some of the key elements in their products that have helped Volcom reach their current sustainability goals while also enabling them to make new ones.
GORE-TEX
Since 1992 GORE have been taking a Life Cycle Assessment approach to the creation of products as a whole to help reduce the environmental impact their brand has. By using GORE-TEX fabric in their outer pieces, Volcom can be confident that their products will stand the test of time and work effectively for longer which, in turn, helps to reduce the number of products that need manufacturing in the first place.
Responsible Down Standard (RDS)
The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) aims to ensure that down and feathers come from animals that have not been subjected to any unnecessary harm. Volcom utilise RDS down in their key insulated pieces, this allows them to know exactly what they are using and where it has come from allowing them to be confidently transparent with consumers.
Bluesign® Approved
The bluesign® system unites the entire supply chain to reduce the impact on both humans and the planet. bluesign® approved materials are guaranteed to use only safe chemicals and are manufactured to meet the highest standards of natural resource conservation, consumer and worker health, and clean air and water discharge during the manufacturing process. By holding themselves accountable to the bluesign® system Volcom must continue to maintain and improve their processes.
