Hailing out of Hokkaido, Island Snowboards is an artisan snowboard brand committed to producing the finest hand-built freeride snowboards. Manufactured in a small bespoke facility deep in the mountains of Hokkaido, the Deep Psych combines state-of-the-art design with the very best materials to create a genuinely stunning surf-inspired all-mountain board that could, quite possibly, be the most fun way to get down a mountain. Built around a heavily tapered directional shape featuring extra length in the front, a shortened tail, and Island’s Layback Camber, the Deep Psych lets you drive the board hard into and out of the turn. Match that innovative shape with the Deep Psych’s longer sidecut, and you have a board that wants to blast on the piste. But that shape isn’t just about riding piste because the Deep Psych is an absolute dream in the pow. With effortless float, this board can handle even the deepest snow. So, if you are after a high-performance board that rewrites your whole snowboarding experience, the Island Deep Psych might be the best thing you’ve ever spent your money on. Don’t forget, to het the most out of the Deep Psych; you need to ride it 5 to 6cm shorter than a traditional board.
Rider Profile: All-Terrain freeriders
The Deep Psch is aimed at riders looking for a high-performance freeride board that delivers outstanding carving on the piste with class-leading lift and float in the pow.
Shape Overview: Tapered Directional
The Deep Psych utilises a fully directional, heavily tapered freeride shape. With extra length in the front, a shortened tail and Island’s layback camber profile, it delivers a unique riding experience. You can load up the nose of the board into a carve, and it just drives through the turn. The shortened tail perfectly harmonises with that heavily tapered shape, giving the Deep Psych effortless float in the pow, making this one of the easiest boards to ride in deep snow. To give the board its stunning on-piste performance, Island gives it a relatively extended sidecut for the length. This longer sidecut delivers a stable and solid carve at even the highest speeds and contributes massively to making this one of the funnest boards to ride on piste.
Profile: Layback Camber
Layback Camber is a traditional setback camber with early and smooth transitions into the tip and
tail. Those early rise tips allow snow to flow under the nose, reduce drag, and ensure the board comes onto the plane quickly and easily. The regular camber allows the rider to power up the sidecut across its entire length, creating a stable and reassuring ride on edge.
Construction
Heading up the Deep Psych’s high-quality construction is the Hokkaido wood core. This locally sourced tip-to-tail wood core is formed from Honoki with Tamo stringers for increased pop. This combination of Hokkaido-sourced woods gives the perfect balance of strength, smooth response, and insane snap. The Deep Psych utilises tri-ax glass to ensure that the structural layers can take full advantage of that advanced core. With fibres running at 45° and 0°, the board delivers a torsionally responsive ride, ensuring that no matter how hard you push, it never feels compromised. To add extra pop to the board, Island add Carbon V stringers running out from the inserts to the contact points; these stringers power up the contacts, giving the board its lightning-fast response and control.
Base
The Isosport 7000 Sintered base is both super fast and super tough. With excellent wax-holding properties, this base is one of the fastest and most durable snowboard bases available.
