The Basic has been in Yes's women's collection for a few years, albeit under the Emoticon name. However, last season Yes decided to sack off the old name and bring the board in line with its male sibling, and thus the Emoticon became the Women's Basic. Even though the names changed, you've still got that multiple Good-Wood-winning performance that marks this board as something special in its class. Built around a true-twin blunt-tipped freestyle shape that's equally at home in the park as it is over the whole mountain, the women's Basic is perfect for complete beginners through to more experienced riders looking for a more playful riding board.
The Women's Basic is aimed at beginners through to expert riders looking for a more balanced all-terrain board that delivers an easy-going ride without compromising out-and-out performance.
The Women's Basic's twin shape gives it a more balanced freestyle feel, so it rides great on the mountain, but it's entirely at home when you want to hit the park. However, what makes the Women's Basic a genuinely outstanding board is the addition of the unique UnderBite Edge profile. UnderBite edges re-distribute the rider's weight to enhance ease of turning and edge hold. Creating divots inward at the binding area disrupts the flow of energy along the surface of the edge that's in contact with the snow while the board is turning. This disruption directs your weight/energy into the areas where it's needed most, from the bindings to the contact points and through the centre of the board where the carving arc takes place. This segmenting of the sidecut into three principal zones focuses your body weight into areas that initiate, hold and release turns.
The Women's Basic's 3-3-3 CamRock profile combines even rocker zones at the tip and tail with an even camber through the middle of the board. This innovative profile creates hook-free zones at the contact points, ensuring you get a more reassuring feel when riding rails or pressing boxes. That rockered uplift at the front also adds extra float in the pow, so even though the Women's Basic is a twin, it still delivers outstanding performance over the whole mountain. That versatility is carried over into the responsive camber. This mid-height camber extends from before the insert packs and gives the board a more robust and reassuring underfoot feel that you only get from cambered boards.
The Women's Basic is the perfect example of that old saying, 'Sometimes less is more'. Reading through the spec list, you get a traditional snowboard construction without any of the headline-grabbing pointless techs that many brands flag up. However, that's not bad because YES uses a high-quality poplar wood core wrapped with high-quality bi-ax glass fibre. These two materials are the building blocks for a great snowboard; everything else at this price point is just fluff. So, you get a board that gives the perfect balance of pop, control and playfulness. Everything that you could ever ask for with this kind of board.
The low-maintenance, easy-repair extruded base delivers excellent performance in all conditions without the need to be continuously waxing it.
