Spherical lenses curve equally along the X and Y axes, which results in a slight ‘bubble’ look. The increased volume allows for more airflow to reduce fogging, and the curvature of the lens provides a more optically correct visual. 

The traditional style that appears ‘flat' is a cylindrical lens that curves around its vertical axis. These tend to be cheaper to produce, so they’re a good budget option, and loads of riders prefer this retro, lower-volume aesthetic.

Toric lenses are a best-of-both-worlds option that take features from both spherical and cylindrical lenses, deliberately shaped to reduce glare points and avoid distortion for top-of-the-range performance.
