NOW Binding Technology Explained

Since the invention of highback in the mid-eighties binding design and materials have improved but never really evolved. Seven years ago, JF Pelchat launched NOW (bindings) with the aim of providing an enhanced experience for riders. His bindings have gone on to be a massive success, proving popular with snowboarders across the globe and attracting an impressive roster of pros.

JF Pelchat had always been interested in snowboarding design - working on personal projects way before he became a pro in the 90’s. He learnt his trade at REV Snowboard manufactures before riding for and working with Burton on early versions of their E.S.T system and other products.

Back in 2005, he had the idea for a new type of 'skateboard inspired' binding. He spent the next few years developing prototypes and looking for financial backers. Having been turned down by several big snowboarding companies, he managed to strike a deal with Nidecker. With their engineering expertise and monetary support, he brought his concept binding to market, in 2010.

How do NOW snowboard bindings work?

The main difference between a ‘standard’ binding and NOW's bindings is ‘Skate Tech’ and the kingpin system they use. The kingpin sits in the middle of the baseplate frame and allows the binding to pivot around it, increasing the energy transferred into the edge of a snowboard. This means you can put less effort into a turn (reducing fatigue) and yet receive better grip, control and response.

“The easiest way to understand the binding’s concept is: take a skateboard, flip it upside down…in my application, the “skateboard hanger” is the binding, and the deck is the snowboard.”

Now Binding Progression

Never happy with their work, NOW continue to improve on their bindings always searching for ways to make them better and more fun for riders. The latest addition to their binding line-up is the Sieva strap. Sieva stands for Single-Injected EVA and eliminates the need for any stitching. The result is a comfortable and durable binding strap that weighs next to nothing.
