How To Size Your Trucks

If you’ve decided to build your own custom skateboard, first of all, congrats! Second of all, make sure to check out our guide to setting up your own deck safely and efficiently here.

As you’re choosing components, you’ll want to make sure you size everything correctly for optimum performance, but when it comes to trucks things can be a little confusing. When choosing trucks for your skateboard there are two widths to bear in mind - the hangar width and the axle (or overall) width. Ideally, the overall width and the width of your deck will match up as this will offer the most stability when riding and allow you to centre over your deck.

Unfortunately, most truck companies use different measurements when naming their products which can muddy the waters a little. Broadly speaking each size truck will have an ideal-sized board that it corresponds with, but the nature of the product does allow for a little bit of wiggle room in either direction. We’ve made a handy guide below to allow you to get the right fit for your deck.

Independent Trucks

139 = Ideal for an 8” deck, but will fit between 7.8” - 8.2”
144 = Ideal for an 8.25” deck but will fit between 8.2” - 8.375”
149 = Ideal for an 8.5” deck but will fit between 8.375” - 8.6”
159 = Ideal for an 8.75” deck but will fit between 8.6” - 9”
